Upon his return to the Indian country, McGee married a Choctaw named Kanahhoyo, settled near present Old Houlka, Mississippi, and fathered a son named Samuel. Later, after his first wife's death, He married Elizabeth Oxberry, a Chickasaw, and fathered a daughter named Jane. They seperated in 1821. McGee was the Chackasaw tribe's principal interpreter from 1786 to 1818, though in 1794 he was replaced temporarily by William McLish for dealing with the Spanish. In 1804, he refused to interpret any longer without a raise, and his salary was raised to $500 a year. In 1841, (seven years before his death in 1848), McGee gave a lengthy interview to Lyman Draper on the history of the Chickasaw Indians. Draper made over 20 pages of handwritten notes on this interview. These notes are now in the custody of the Wisconsin Historical Society, and are microfilmed as a part of the "Draper Collection".
