John D. McLAUGHLIN is a brother of Lottie McLAUGHLIN. He appears on the September 1890 Chickasaw Annuity Rolls on the page before Lottie. In addition, two of his children bear the same name as Lottie's parents, (and his parents as well). In 1890 his age is shown to be 38, and his wife's 33. He also appears on the 1893 Chickasaw Annunity Roll. Both Rolls are for Pickens County, Chickasaw Indian Nation, Indian Territory. Pickens County is the county where Lottie was from and where her parents are supposed to have lived.

He went to Green Castle, Indiana, for schooling, (Greencastle High School). After leaving school, he turned to cattle raising and farming. (His father had been a prominent cattle raiser.) His ranch was near the mouth of the Washita River. In 1890, he moved his operation to near Linn, I.T. There he had 2,400 acres of land, of which 600 acres were under fence and devoted to raising corn and cotton. ("History of Indian Territory", by D.C. Gideon, p.907.)

In 1884 or 1885, he was indicted jointly with James Wasson for the murder of Henry Wright, killed in 1872. Wasson had also killed Almarine Watkins in 1884. They may never have been apprehended but for the large reward posted by Mrs. Watkins, (Lucy Juzan). Wasson was tried and convicted 30 July 1885, in "Hanging Judge Isaac Parker's" court at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Wasson went to the gallows on 23 April 1886.

After Wasson's trial, McLaughlin was tried and the jury failed to agree. McLaughlin's case came up for trial again in August, 1886, but was postponed until November first. On Monday, November 8, the case went to the jury. They deliberated until Thursday afternoon, at wich time they brought in a verdict of acquittal. "McLaughlin had been in jail for fifteen months, he was known as a kind and gentle man at all times, except when drunk; he was wild and reckless." His uncles, Ben C. and Wesley B. Burney and J.J. McAlester, prominent citzens of the Indian Territory, believed him innocent and they used all honorable in his behalf. ("Hell On The Border", p.53.)

McLaughlin was defended by an attorney named Cravens, for whom he later named one of his sons in gratitude.

He received Homestead Paten #18199 and Alottment Paten #16073.
