THE SIX YEAR MYSTERY My mother, Dora (Deloris) Louise JONES Armstrong, related to me a conversation she had with my Aunt Mabel (Mabelle) ARMSTRONG Middaugh, not long after she had married my father, Mickey Homer ARMSTRONG, concerning my grandfather, John Porter ARMSTRONG. It seems, as was told to my mother, that sometime during the early childhood of Mabel, (the oldest daughter of John Porter), he went to work, (as a manager of a large grocery store?), one day and after the day was done he simply disappeared for about six years. Supposedly, no one knew where he went or what he did. Then one day he suddenly reappeared on their door step like he had never been away. Now my grandmother, Sudie DURHAM Armstrong, was a very fiesty and headstrong woman and a half-blooded Chickasaw Indian to boot, so it is a wonder that after all that time she even let my grandfather in the front door. Yet, the children never heard one word said about the incident and my grandfather just took up where he had left off six years before. It is assumed, that because of my grandmother's reaction, or lack of reaction, that she must have know where he had been, but as no explanation has ever been given, it is a mystery to this day. (As best mother can remember, this disappearance took place either in the six year period before my father's birth or just after it.) _________________ Armstrong Oral Tradition as told to Kerry ARMSTRONG by Dora (Deloris) Louise JONES Armstrong, 31 MAY 1991.
