CHICKASAW LETTERS -- 1847

A. M. M. Upshaw to Wm. Medill, 5 APR 1847:

Chickasaw Agency

April 5th 1847

Sir

I have been requested by the Chief of the Chickasaws (Col. James McLaughlin) and the Parents of the boys that are now at Col. R. W. Johnsons school in Kentuck to permit them all to come home; they wish to send others in their places. I would respectfully suggest that the [__?__] that is all aimed to be sent to Col. Johnsons school be first sent and the conductor that takes them on could bring those that are there home; should you think proper to take that course you will please send means on to pay the expenses or I had much rather that Maj. Armstrong the Supt should atend to the money arangements than my self; be pleased to let me hear from you on this subject at your convience.

Very respectfully

Council House

May 3rd 1847

Sir

We the Chief and Captains of the Chickasaws have had the letter of the Honl Commissioner of Indian Affairs, of the 26th of January 1847 relative to the commutation of rations, and of a reduction of seven months ration to the late Chickasaw Emigrants, before us in Genral Council and have decided that the Commissioner of Indian Affairs commute the rations and pay to the Emigrants the money at the same rate that Mr G. W. Knox late contractor furnished the Chickasaws, and we have also decided after taking every circumstance into consideration, that the late emigrants are to be furnished with 12 months rations instead of nineteen.
